Impact test

Toys with driving mechanisms should have mechanisms enclosed so that they do not expose any accessible parts or sharp points when tested.

They must also not present the hazard of crushing fingers or other parts of the body.

Winder keys and starting handles must have a clear space between them and the main body of the toy so that a 12mm diameter rod can be inserted.

Testing in school

The tests can be completed as in industry.

Your results should be recorded, a conclusion drawn and a decision made.

Testing in industry

Drop test
Drop the toy five times through a height of 850mm on to a 4mm thick steel plate, placed on a non flexible surface. Release the toy in a position that allows the most onerous impact.

Tip over test
Place the toy on the same horizontal surface and tip the toy over three times.

Impact test
Drop a metallic 1kg. weight, 80mm in diameter from a height of 100mm onto the toy.

Compression test
Apply a compression force of 110N through a rigid metal disc, maintain for 10 seconds.

Check whether casings have split or small parts, sharp edges, points or mechanisms have become accessible.
